Set against that field are hand painted naif medallions, floral and sun shapes in cobalt, ochre and deep red, alongside small panels of stripes, a synthesis of Italian pottery tradition and the experimental spirit of the 1960s. It is a departure from the traditional Deruta maiolica, and it sits with the modernist ceramics that Italian studios produced through that decade.

The pitcher was acquired in Sicily in 1964 and has stayed with the same family for sixty years, and that single owner history has kept the glaze intact and the colours vivid. Excellent vintage condition.

It was originally part of a larger service, and it works today as a standalone sculptural object, a textured counterpoint to the clean lines of Danish or Australian mid century timber furniture.

This piece is a family heirloom from our own collection and is not for sale, shown here as an example of the modernist Italian ceramics we love.
