1960s Mid-Century Modern Teak Sled-Base Hallway Bench
Produced in the mid-1960s, this piece represents the peak of Australian mid-century furniture manufacturing. During this era, local makers were heavily influenced by Danish modernism, moving away from heavy, traditional furniture toward floating modules and airy, sculptural forms.
This specific bench is a functional relic of the telephone table era, designed to serve as a central communications hub in the modern home, providing a seat for long conversations and a drawer for the directory.
The inclusion of the sled or sleigh base was a signature of high-end designers like Gerald Easden, who sought to create furniture that appeared light and unencumbered by traditional legs.
A versatile 108cm hallway unit, this bench features an innovative dual-access storage module. The single drawer is engineered with original flip-down pull levers on both faces, allowing it to be opened from either side. This rare mechanical detail makes the piece ideal for placement in the center of a room or as a divider in an open-plan mid-century interior.
Condition:
This bench has undergone a sympathetic restoration to ensure it is structurally sound and aesthetically revived for modern use.
The teak has been cleaned and touched up to enhance its natural luster while preserving the authentic aged patina.
While the finish has been stabilised, the top retains minor honest signs of its previous life.
The seat is finished in its original deep black tufted vinyl, which remains in very good condition.
Both brass flip-levers and the sliding drawer function smoothly.
