Frequently asked questions
What defines a Fox & Wedge piece?
Every item in our collection is hand-selected based on three core principles: exceptional original craftsmanship, timeless design aesthetic, and the potential for masterful restoration. We curate pieces that possess a distinct character and history, ensuring each one is a unique statement against mass production.
What do you mean by "eco-conscious restoration"?
Our commitment extends to using materials that are both planet-friendly and safe for your living space.
We meticulously select premium, non-toxic oils, waxes, and finishes, with a strong preference for natural options.
This ensures we protect the authentic character of our vintage pieces while guaranteeing a healthier home environment for you.
Why should I choose restored vintage furniture over new?
Choosing vintage isn't just a preference; it's a conscious decision for unparalleled quality, distinct character, and profound sustainability.
Mid-Century furniture, crafted with superior techniques from solid timber and timber veneer, was inherently designed to last multiple lifetimes. These aren't fleeting trends; they are enduring investments.
This is the ultimate "Slow Furniture." By giving a beautiful, handcrafted piece a second life, you're actively diverting iconic designs from landfill and significantly reducing the demand for new, mass-produced items – especially the flat-pack furniture often designed for short lifespans.
Beautiful timbers like Teak, Rosewood, and Oak carry a history and soul that mass-produced furniture simply cannot replicate. Each piece adds an organic warmth and unique personality to your home that tells a story.
Can you tell me more about your Greenfleet partnership?
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond the furniture we restore.
For every piece you bring home, we partner with Greenfleet to plant a native tree right here in Victoria.
Together, we're helping to restore a vital, biodiverse ecosystem in Ledcourt, near the Grampians National Park.
This forest is legally protected for 100 years, creating a lasting habitat for native wildlife, including many endangered species.
How should I care for my restored furniture?
We provide a care guide with every purchase. Generally, we recommend keeping your piece out of direct sunlight and away from extreme temperatures. For cleaning, a simple wipe with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is usually all that is needed. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, as they can damage the restored finish.
Can you tell me the specific history of my piece?
While we would love to provide a complete history for every item, their exact origins are often lost to time. However, we are deeply committed to education. For every piece, we provide detailed information about its design era (e.g., Victorian, Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern), the materials used, the maker (if known), and the unique characteristics of its style.
What does "hand-restored" actually mean at Fox & Wedge?
For us, "hand-restored" is a comprehensive, hands-on process that honours the soul of the furniture. It involves:
- Structural Fortification: We ensure every joint is stable, every leg is level, and the piece is as functional as it is beautiful.
- Surface Revival: We don't strip away character. We painstakingly clean, repair, and refinish surfaces to remove blemishes and enhance the timber grain that gives a piece its unique story.
- Authentic Techniques: We use restoration methods and materials that are both modern and appropriate to the original era of the furniture, ensuring a finish that is both durable and historically respectful.
