Vintage Geometric Kilim Runner

$0.00 AUD

A beautiful example of mid-century Thracian weaving, this cotton kilim represents the distinct Sarkoy tradition of European Turkey. Distinguished by its crisp cotton construction, a departure from the heavier wool weavings of Anatolian nomads, this piece features a rhythmic diamond lattice design in a palette of soft rose, ochre, and charcoal against a natural cream field.

Unlike the nomadic Yörük tribes who wove strictly with wool, the weavers of the Thrace region (specifically around Şarköy) were settled villagers with access to cotton agriculture. This allowed them to develop a unique slit-weave technique that is finer and flatter than typical kilims, originally intended for use as divan covers or summer floor spreads.

The geometric language of this piece is talismanic. The central field is dominated by a repeating diamond lattice housing the stylized 'Göz' (Eye) motif, a protective symbol intended to ward off the 'evil eye' and protect the household. Interspersed are abstract representations of the 'Pıtrak' (Burdock) plant, traditionally used to symbolize abundance and protection against evil spirits.

Woven entirely from cotton, this flatweave offers a unique tactile experience. It is lighter and cooler than wool, with a dry hand feel that is characteristic of the region. The colors suggest a transitional period of dyeing (likely mid-20th century), combining the stability of early commercial dyes with the nuanced, mellowing properties of traditional natural pigments.
