Vintage Baluch Tribal Rug with Triple Gul Medallions in Madder Red, c.1950s

$0.00 AUD
A piece of profound authenticity and nomadic soul, this vintage Baluch tribal rug is a testament to the enduring artistry of the weavers of the Baluchistan region. Woven circa 1950, it captures the spirit of a vanishing way of life in its rich, earthy palette and potent symbolic language.

The field is commanded by three powerful octagonal medallions, or 'guls.' More than mere decoration, the gul is the weaver's tribal emblem — a declaration of identity and heritage. This specific interpretation, with its quartered interior and intricate latch-hook details, is a unique Baluchi adaptation of ancient Turkmen motifs, speaking to a history of cultural exchange at the crossroads of Central Asia.

Set against a deep, madder-red ground symbolic of life and vitality, the guls are surrounded by eight-pointed stars, ancient talismans of wisdom and protection. The entire composition is framed by a series of 'running water' and 'fence' borders, which symbolically guard the sacred space within while invoking the life-giving forces essential to nomadic survival.

This rug is a tactile masterpiece, hand-knotted in hand-spun wool that imbues the surface with a subtle lustre and remarkable durability. The gentle, organic color variations, known as 'abrash,' are the beautiful result of natural dyes and stand as a hallmark of its authentic, non-industrial origins. Note the wide, flat-woven kilim ends—a signature of the finest Baluch craftsmanship.

With its versatile size and profound narrative depth, this piece is perfectly suited for a discerning interior, whether grounding a study, adding character to an entryway, or serving as a captivating piece of wall art. It has been professionally cleaned and is ready to continue its story in a new home, bringing with it the history and soul of the nomadic artisan.
