Black office chair with cushioned backrest and seat on chrome wheeled base against white wall

Grant Featherston Ergonomic Desk Chair by Aristoc Featherston Interiors

$0.00 AUD

A superb example of high-end contract furniture from the late 1970s, this ergonomic office chair was retailed by the renowned Featherston Interiors Aust. Pty. Ltd.

While it bears the famous Grant Featherston name, the mechanisms are distinctly German-engineered, offering a level of build quality and adjustability rarely seen in vintage office pieces.

Far from a standard static chair, this piece features a sophisticated suite of ergonomic adjustments:

  • Dynamic Backrest: The wool-upholstered backrest is height-adjustable via a side lever and features a pivoting mechanism that tilts back with the user for dynamic support.
  • Suspension Gas Lift: The seat height is fully adjustable via a smooth gas-lift system (operated by a side lever). Uniquely, the mechanism offers a suspension-like dampening effect, providing a "soft landing" and superior comfort when seated.

Upholstered in the original chocolate brown wool, the chair sits on a polished chrome pedestal base with a four-star castor footing. It is a perfect blend of Australian design heritage and robust German industrial engineering — built to last and designed for serious work.

Condition:

Very good vintage condition. The gas lift and dampening suspension are operating smoothly. The backrest tilt and height adjustments also function perfectly. The wool upholstery has been steam cleaned and the chrome retains a bright finish.

Please note: While this piece has been professionally restored, it remains a vintage item. Some minor signs of age and use may persist, serving as a testament to its history and authenticity.

Dimensions: 93H X 45W X 55D CM

The History: Grant Featherston vs. Featherston Interiors

To the discerning collector, the name "Featherston" is synonymous with Australian Modernism. However, there is a fascinating distinction between Grant Featherston’s early handcrafted residential designs and pieces bearing the "Featherston Interiors" label.

In the late 1960s and 70s, the manufacturing giant Aristoc — famous for producing Grant’s designs — launched Featherston Interiors as a dedicated division for high-end commercial and contract furniture. This marked a shift from the domestic living room to the executive office.

While Grant and Mary Featherston continued to lead design innovation, this era was defined by a pursuit of technical perfection for the workplace. Featherston Interiors began integrating superior global technology into their Australian-made pieces.

This specific chair is a perfect example of that "Golden Era" of contract manufacturing. It marries the Australian aesthetic of Featherston Interiors with robust German engineering. By importing advanced gas-lift and suspension mechanisms from Germany (the world leaders in ergonomics at the time) and finishing them in Melbourne with local wool and assembly, Featherston Interiors created a chair that was decades ahead of standard office furniture.
