A stunning work of woven art, this vintage Afghan kilim from the mid-20th century is a powerful expression of tribal identity and cultural exchange. Measuring an impressive 288cm by 145cm, its generous runner format makes it a versatile and commanding presence in any interior.

Its design is a fascinating story of cultural migration. While the powerful geometric patterns are rooted in the traditions of the Bakhtiari tribe of Persia, they have been masterfully interpreted by an Afghan hand. This artistic dialogue resulted in a piece that is both a tribute to a classic Persian style and a proud statement of Afghan craftsmanship.

At its heart, this kilim is a woven prayer for protection and prosperity. The three large diamond medallions that dominate the madder-red field are ancient symbols of safeguarding, believed to protect the home from negative forces. At the same time, they represent fertility and the continuity of family. This central space is then framed by a series of symbolic borders. The most prominent, in a warm orange derived from natural plant sources, is filled with a repeating latch-hook motif (çengel). This powerful design acts as a guardian, its sharp form intended to "catch" and neutralise harm. The final, outer border uses the comb motif (tarak), a deeply personal symbol tied to hopes for marriage, family, and a harmonious home. Together, these elements transform the kilim into a symbolic fortress, a testament to the weaver's deepest values.

The artistry is evident in every detail. The wool, sourced from local Afghan sheep, was spun by hand, a process that imparts subtle variations in the yarn. When dyed in small batches using traditional vegetable dyes — madder for red, indigo for the deep blue — these variations create a beautiful, painterly effect known as abrash, visible as gentle waves of color across the surface. This is the unmistakable fingerprint of a handmade textile.

The weaver employed the slit-weave technique, a form of tapestry weaving that creates a pileless, perfectly flat surface. This method is responsible for the design's crisp, graphic quality and has a remarkable consequence: the kilim is fully reversible. The pattern is identical on both sides, a hallmark of the highest quality craftsmanship that doubles the life and versatility of the piece.

In very good condition, this kilim is a rare and evocative find. It offers a direct connection to a rich history of tribal art, ready to bring its story, strength, and timeless beauty into a contemporary space.
