This exceptional and highly preserved mid-century sideboard is a definitive example of Australian post-war modernism.

Manufactured circa 1960 by Chatley Productions of Preston, Victoria, this piece embodies the functional elegance and clean, sculptural lines that defined the era. 

Restored to its original, excellent condition, this credenza stands as a testament to the intelligent material choices of its time. The body, apron, and sliding doors are finished in their original, high-fidelity premium laminate — a technologically advanced surface prized by mid-century designers for its superior durability.

Crucially, these surfaces are framed by solid teak edge banding, a premium construction detail that protects the edges and provides a refined, tactile transition from the surface to the frame. The pristine and unmarred surface finish allows for a new, cosmopolitan mode of living without the preciousness of traditional veneers. The rich, warm grain beautifully captures the aesthetic of walnut and teak. 

This functionalist body is contrasted perfectly with organic, high-touch elements. The three drawers and two sliding doors feature sculptural, recessed lip pulls crafted from solid, richly-grained teak. The elegantly tapered, splayed cigar legs are also solid timber, giving the piece a visual lightness. 

The asymmetrical design offers functional and intelligent storage. The cabinet features three smooth-gliding sliding doors, which open to reveal a large storage area with removable shelves. The unit features a three top drawers, including a top drawer meticulously lined with its original felt for cutlery. 

This sideboard bears the original maker's stamp, confirming its provenance as "Chatley Productions, Preston, VIC." A rare and savvy acquisition for the collector of authentic Australian design, this piece is a functional sculpture, preserved as a time capsule from the golden age of Melbourne's design scene.
