Design History & Significance
The 'Mitzi' (1957) marks a pivotal moment in Australian design history. It was one of the first fruits of the collaboration between Grant Featherston and Aristoc Industries following his appointment as Consultant Designer in 1957.
This partnership granted Featherston access to sophisticated metal manufacturing technology previously unavailable in Australia. Moving beyond his famous plywood 'Contour' series, Featherston utilized these new capabilities to refine the 'Mitzi', creating its signature tapered tubular steel legs and adjusting the angles to create a distinct "floating" seat architecture.
Listed on the Australian Design Index in 1964, the Mitzi was originally conceived as a high-end stacking chair for architectural venues. However, its elegant profile made it an immediate success in the domestic market, with over 160,000 units produced between 1957 and 1967, cementing its status as an icon of the post-war Australian interior.
