Description

Fred Ward designed this sideboard for Myer's Heritage range, produced from the late 1940s through the 1960s and built around solid native Australian timber at a time when most manufacturers were working with imported wood.

Ward avoided ornament in favour of letting the timber carry the design, and this piece reflects that clearly: splayed legs, simple lines, and solid Tasmanian Myrtle that has taken on a warm, golden amber tone with age. The sideboard carries Ward's signature handles and includes the original glass sliding door.

The piece has been fully restored, inside and out; the internal cabinetry, removable shelf and all three drawers have been refinished alongside the exterior. It is finished in Oli Natura hardwax oil, a German-made finish that penetrates the timber rather than sitting on top of it, leaving a natural, breathable surface. This is an original 1950s piece rather than a reproduction; restoration has addressed wear from its age, not replaced the timber itself.
