Description
This ink and light colour painting on silk depicts Hotei, the Japanese god of contentment and good fortune, striding forward with his cloth sack (budai, his namesake) slung over a staff, prayer beads in hand.
The work is signed by Kita Busei (1776–1856), a pupil of the Edo-period master Tani Bunchō, and carries two personal seals: a round relief seal reading "Ka-an," one of his art names, and a square intaglio seal reading "Busei no in," meaning "seal of Busei." Busei worked across the Kanō, Rinpa, and literati (Nanga) traditions.
Housed in a solid teak frame with an acid-free mat and UV-protective glass.
Very good antique condition, with light, even toning to the silk consistent with its age.
