Description

Bitossi's Spagnolo pattern is pressed into the lower half of this Italian ceramic lamp base, a lattice of quatrefoils and diamonds in burnt orange and brown under a mustard glaze, made around 1970.

Bitossi has made ceramics in Montelupo Fiorentino, near Florence, since the 1920s. Collectors attribute the Spagnolo pattern, also listed as Spagnoli, to Aldo Londi, Bitossi's art director. This base is unsigned, so we describe it as associated with Londi. Run a finger over it and you can feel each stamped shape under the glaze.

The drum shade is custom made for this base from a length of vintage wool in bands of mustard, orange and rust, with raised looped stripes between them. Switched on, the wool glows a warm amber and the loops stand out in relief, so the shade carries the same texture as the stamped base below it. It is lined in white on a white metal frame, and because the wool is vintage, the shade is one of a kind.

Excellent vintage condition, with no chips or cracks. The fine dark specks in the glaze are from the original firing. Tested and tagged for Australian use, with a B22 bayonet fitting.

Overall height 62 cm. Shade 30 cm high and 30 cm in diameter.

It suits a teak sideboard or a bedside table, where the mustard and orange sit well against warm timber. Message us to organise an inspection, or to request a video call or more photos.
