1960s Eames for Herman Miller Dining Table with Italian Travertine Fossil Top
A Collector's Eames Dining Table with a Bespoke Platner-Edge Italian Travertine Top
Showcasing an exceptional and unique dining suite, pairing the iconic 1960s designs of Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller with a magnificent custom Italian stone top. This set was imported from a Los Angeles collection in 2004 and represents a beautiful fusion of authentic vintage character and bespoke luxury.
The foundation is the timeless Eames ET610 contract table base from the 1960s, with its classic black steel column and four-star polished aluminium legs. This supports a substantial, custom-made Italian Travertine tabletop, crafted by the renowned stonemasons at C.I.M. Italy in November 2004.
The tabletop is distinguished by a sophisticated, bevelled Platner-style edge, a detail synonymous with the highest level of mid-century design. This premium finish is complemented by an extraordinary feature: embedded within the travertine is the fossil of an ancient bivalve mollusc. By a remarkable feat of chance, the stone was perfectly sliced during its preparation, revealing a flawless and captivating heart-shaped cross-section. This beautiful accident of geology and craftsmanship elevates the piece from furniture to a work of natural art.
