1970s Norman Archibald Alpine Ash Dining Chairs for Nore Furniture

$0.00 AUD

At Fox & Wedge Vintage, we value pieces that tell a story through material and grit. This set of six 'Nore' dining chairs, designed by Norman Archibald for Nore Furniture, is a profound expression of that ethos. A staple of Australian mid-century excellence, Archibald’s work earned its place on the global stage at the 1980 Cologne International Furniture Fair and remains a permanent fixture within the National Gallery of Victoria.

While many recognise the 'Nore' line for its leather slings, this particular set features the iconic, all-timber backrest configuration with Norman 'Clover' detail to the backrest. It's a brilliant display of Mid-Century craftsmanship, where the focus shifts to the organic grain and structural honesty of Victorian Alpine Ash. The frames are built with signature exposed dowel joinery, ensuring these chairs remain as sturdy today as they were forty years ago. The seat consists of a single, thick sling of saddle-stitched Howe leather in a rich chocolate tone, providing a grounded contrast to the sculptural timber uprights.

This set has been kept together since its original purchase in 1978. Coming from a single-owner home, the timber has been beautifully preserved, and the leather has softened into a characterful patina that only time can produce. Offering a more architectural silhouette than its full-leather counterparts, these chairs are a functional investment for a home that appreciates raw, intentional design.
