Description
Wings raised and beak pointed forward, the kingfisher is modelled at the moment it drops toward the water. It was made by Diana Pottery in Marrickville, Sydney, where modeller Ken Day designed a set of three kingfisher wall ornaments in graduated sizes. The feathers on both wings and the fanned tail are incised into the clay, and the glaze settles into each line, so the detail holds up from across a room.
The colour is applied by hand. Turquoise runs from the head down the back and out along the leading edge of the wings, then warms into a rust brown through the flight feathers and tail. The beak and eye are finished in glossy black. Where the glaze thins over raised edges it turns lighter, and where it pools it deepens, which gives the bird a sense of light falling across it.
In very good condition. Approx 10cm x 12cm
The plaque hangs from two holes on the reverse. It suits a short stretch of wall where something larger would crowd the space: beside a window, above a bedside table, or at the turn of a hallway.
