Description

The arms of a sixty year old Danish lounge chair show exactly where people have rested their hands. The leather is darker there, softer, and catches the afternoon light. Looked after, that patina keeps deepening for decades. Left to dry out, the same hide stiffens, creases and eventually cracks.

Made in Denmark by Guardian, this kit pairs Leather Cleaner with Leather Conditioner, two 250 ml bottles with two sponges to apply them. It suits aniline, semi aniline and pigmented leather, so one kit covers soft, uncoated aniline hides as well as coated leather.

What is in the box

  • Guardian Leather Cleaner, 250 ml
  • Guardian Leather Conditioner, 250 ml
  • Two application sponges

Why use it

Leather changes with the room it lives in. Sun through a window, ducted heating and daily use draw the natural oils from the hide, while dust and skin oils settle into the grain and flatten the colour. The first signs show at the arms, seat edges and headrests. The cleaner lifts that dirt, and the conditioner then helps the hide stay supple and lowers the risk of drying, scratching and fading.

What it is for

Smooth leather on lounge chairs, sofas and dining chairs: aniline, semi aniline and pigmented leather. It is not made for suede or nubuck.

Before you start

Some colours can look slightly deeper or darker after treatment, especially aniline leather, which has little or no protective coating. Test both products on a hidden area first, such as the back of a seat or under an arm, and let it dry fully before treating the whole piece.

How to use it

  1. Shake both bottles well.
  2. Apply the cleaner with one of the sponges or a soft, lint free cloth, in gentle circles with light pressure. Do not scrub.
  3. Clean each panel as a whole, keeping it evenly damp as you go, so it dries without patches.
  4. Leave the leather until it is completely dry.
  5. Apply the conditioner the same way with the second sponge, in light circles, spreading it evenly over whole panels.

To buff off any excess conditioner, we use our bamboo polishing cloths, the same cloths we use on leather in the studio.

How often

Guardian recommends four to six treatments a year for leather furniture in regular use. A chair that sits in afternoon sun belongs at the top of that range.

Why we stock Guardian

Guardian makes its furniture care in Vejen, in southern Denmark. We wanted leather care that suits aniline and semi aniline hides, which many leather balms do not, for the Danish chairs and lounges that come through our Torquay studio. Our introduction to Guardian explains more.
