A classic piece of Australian design history, this round dining table by the Melbourne Chair Company (Melchair) is a standout for its architectural lines and robust Solid Oak construction.

While most Melchair production from the 1960s utilised Teak or Blackwood, this rare Solid Oak edition has been finished to showcase a rich, warm grain. It offers the structural density and beautiful figuring of Oak with the classic mid-century warmth that fits perfectly into any MCM collection.

 

The Melchair design language is all about structural transparency and honest construction.

The Floating Top: This table features their signature floating aesthetic, where the tabletop is elevated slightly above the frame. This creates a clean, architectural shadow line that lightens the overall profile.

The Perimeter Rail: Underneath, the table is built around a heavy-duty recessed rail system. Rather than the legs simply screwing into the underside of the wood, they are integrated into this robust subframe, providing superior stability and allowing for the elegant, tapered splay of the legs.

 

Condition

This piece has been sympathetically restored to retain its vintage soul while ensuring it is rock-solid for the modern home.

Refining: The solid oak top and base has been refinished with premium hardwax oil. This provides a durable, protective coating that is water-resistant and easy to maintain while preserving a natural, matte tactile quality.

Structure: All joints have been professionally reglued and are sturdy.
