Description

Over-dyed in a warm honey tone, this vintage Persian rug has a silk pile on a cotton foundation and measures 160 x 105 cm. The dye has drawn the cream field, dusty pinks and pale blues together into one mellow palette, while the navy medallion and border still hold the design in place.

Fine botanical motifs surround the medallion, and a deep navy border frames the design. The dense, fine weave follows the silk work of the Qom weavers of central Iran, where pile weaving began in the early 1930s. Rugs in this manner borrow and adapt designs from other Persian regions, so they are known less for a single pattern than for the fineness of the knotting. The silk pile has a soft sheen that shifts with the light and the angle you view it from.

Condition is excellent for a vintage piece, with gentle wear consistent with age. The softened colour comes from the over-dye, not from fading. The rug has been professionally cleaned, and the edges are bound and secure.

Fine silk rugs suit low traffic spots: beside a bed, in a study or a hallway, or hung on the wall as textile art. A rug pad keeps it in place. Vacuum on a low setting, and blot spills rather than rubbing.
