Vintage Post-Modern Architect’s Lamp by Lival Finland for Planet Lighting
This isn't just a desk lamp; it is a document of global design history. In the late 1970s and 80s, Australian lighting giant Planet Lighting (famous for the Studio K) partnered with Lival of Finland to bring advanced fluorescent technology to Australian shores. Lival manufactured the sleek, modernist bodies in Sipoo, Finland, while Planet Lighting outfitted them with heavy-duty control gear at their Bellingen, NSW factory.
Why We Love It:
The aesthetic is pure 1980s Post-Modernism — geometric, matte black, and strictly functional. Unlike the curvy mid-century lamps of the 60s, this piece has a machine age precision. The compact fluorescent (PL) tube provides a broad, shadowless wash of light, originally intended for architects and draftsmen but perfect today for creative studios or as a statement reading light.
