Vintage Turkish Patchwork Kilim Rug, an Anatolian Sampler of Feminine Symbols, c1970 - Fox & Wedge

Vintage Anatolian Patchwork Kilim

$0.00 AUD
Woven from the whispers of Anatolian history, this captivating vintage patchwork kilim is more than a floor covering - it is a curated anthology of tribal life and a vibrant piece of textile art.

Composed of hand-selected fragments from mid-20th-century Turkish kilims, this piece represents a brilliant act of preservation and artistic reimagining. An artisan-curator has gathered these storied panels, each a verse from a different weaver's life, and stitched them together to create a new, harmonious poem in wool.

The rug tells a powerful and coherent story through a lexicon of ancient symbols. Dominating the composition in fields of brilliant saffron yellow is the Elibelinde, or "Hands-on-Hips" motif—an ancient Anatolian symbol of the mother goddess, fertility, and abundance. This celebration of feminine power is supported by panels of deep, earthy brown carrying the Su Yolu (Running Water) motif, symbolising the vital flow of life itself.

Surrounding these core themes are powerful protective charms. In the sky-blue squares, the Haç (Cross) motif works to ward off the evil eye, while the diamond medallions in the madder-red panels act as a stylised Göz (Eye) to deflect harm. Finally, the comb-like figures in the olive-green sections represent the Tarak (Comb), a blessing for the sanctity of marriage and family. Together, these symbols form a potent, unified prayer for a life that is fertile, protected, and full of vitality.

Handwoven using the traditional slitweave technique, the rug possesses a bold, graphic quality that feels at once ancient and strikingly modern. Its rich, naturally dyed wool fibres have aged to a beautiful patina, lending the piece an authentic character and soulful depth. Backed with a durable cotton cloth for longevity, this kilim has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition.

With its remarkable versatility, this piece can anchor a room with minimalist decor, add a layer of history to a contemporary space, or serve as the perfect complement to a Bohemian or eclectic interior. Whether used on the floor or displayed as a wall hanging, it is an authentic, one-of-a-kind work of art that brings with it a profound story of feminine strength and protection.
