Alrob Five Drawer Tallboy in Oak, c. 1975
Description
Alrob made this tallboy chest of drawers in the mid 1970s from solid oak, with five drawers stacked in a tall, slim case.
Alrob was a respected Melbourne manufacturer of the mid century years, favouring proportion and practicality over decoration in its case furniture. This tallboy follows that restraint, with a straight grained oak finish and clean drawer fronts throughout, and it stands on short legs that lift the case off the floor.
A tallboy uses height rather than floor space, so it suits a smaller bedroom, a hallway or a corner where a wide chest will not fit. Five drawers give room for clothes, linen or a collection, and the flat top holds a lamp, a mirror or a plant.
Solid oak needs little care: wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and use a light furniture oil once a year if the timber looks dry.
