Description

Bought at the Queen Victoria Antique Arts and Craft Centre on 18 May 1987, this graduated set of three Beswick flying partridges still has its original receipt.

Arthur Gredington modelled the design for Beswick of Stoke on Trent, where he had been the first full time modeller since 1939. This is Model 1188, made between 1950 and 1967, with the impressed Beswick England mark and model numbers on the reverse of each bird.

The birds are hand painted in russet, cream and slate blue, with red beaks, dark markings at the neck, barred flanks and golden brown flight feathers. The glaze is glossy and vibrant.

Beswick sold its flying birds in graduated sets, and the three sizes here are how the design was meant to be hung. Hung on a diagonal or in a gentle rise, they give a wall a sense of movement. Each plaque has a hanging hole on the reverse, and the set suits a hallway, a stairwell or the wall above a sideboard.

Flying bird plaques were a popular fixture of mid 20th century homes, and a complete graduated trio shows the design at its best.

To clean, wipe the glaze with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and hang each bird from a secure fixing suited to the weight of the wall.

Condition is excellent, with no chips, cracks or restoration.
