Burgess Atomic Dresser in Solid Oak, c. 1971

$1,450.00 AUD
Description

This Burgess dresser looks like it has nine drawers, but it actually has six. Nine drawer fronts sit in a symmetrical grid, and the piece is fitted out as six drawers behind them.

Burgess made furniture at its factory in Preston, Melbourne, and this dresser is in the Atomic style: each front has a sculpted oval recess, with a recessed oval chrome handle on the wide drawers and a round chrome pull on the narrow centre column. The narrow centre column of round pulls divides the front into three bays, which gives the piece a calm, ordered look and makes it easy to place.

The timber is solid oak, with a soft edge to the top and tapered legs finished in brass sabot feet that lift the whole piece off the floor. Brass sabot feet are small caps at the base of each leg. They protect the timber from scuffs and add a touch of warm metal at floor level, a good match for the cool chrome above.

The dresser has been completely restored and refinished in hardwax oil, which brings out the honey tone of the oak and leaves a matte surface that is easy to maintain. A mark can be touched up locally without stripping the whole top.

A low, wide chest like this suits a bedroom, a hallway or a dining room, and it works as a sideboard as well as a dresser. The top is level and low, with room for a lamp, a mirror or a row of books.

Completely restored and ready for a new home.
