Originally introduced in 1950, the RAR (Rocking Armchair Rod base) became one of the most iconic Eames shell chair designs. This example features the original ivory fibreglass shell, professionally restored rockers, and a custom reupholstery in coral orange Zepel Fibreguard fabric with the original black vinyl edge trim preserved.

A rare vintage Eames piece, this chair combines authentic mid-century design history with renewed comfort and everyday durability. Available to view at the Fox & Wedge Torquay studio.

Authentic Vintage Eames RAR Rocking Chair by Herman Miller

The Eames RAR Rocking Chair is one of the most recognisable designs from Charles and Ray Eames’ legendary fibreglass shell chair collection.

First launched by Herman Miller in 1950, the RAR was part of the original range of shell chair base variations and became famous for its distinctive rocking rod base. Herman Miller discontinued the rocking base in 1968, making original vintage RAR examples increasingly difficult to find compared with other Eames shell chair variations.

This chair features a genuine vintage fibreglass shell, produced before Herman Miller discontinued fibreglass shell manufacturing in 1993. The professionally restored base and carefully selected Zepel Fibreguard upholstery maintain the chair’s original character while adding modern durability and comfort.
