Parker Butterfly Extension Dining Table in Teak, c.1960
Description
Parker Furniture built this butterfly table to work at two sizes: a round 120 cm table for everyday meals, and a 176 cm oval when guests arrive.
Parker built its reputation in Sydney through the 1960s, and the tapered legs on this table show why. They are solid teak, narrowing towards the floor, and they keep the table light in appearance even when the top is fully open. Teak was the timber Australian makers favoured for dining furniture of the period, and it takes daily use well.
The butterfly leaf is the useful part. It is self storing, so the centre leaf folds away beneath the top when it is not in use and there is no loose extension to find room for in a cupboard or garage. Closed, the round top suits a smaller dining space or an eat in kitchen. Opened, the oval seats up to six. That flexibility suits homes where the dining table has to do more than one job, from weeknight dinners to homework to a long lunch with family.
Professionally restored and in excellent condition, it is ready to move straight into a dining room.
Dimensions: 73 cm H, 120 cm diameter closed, 176 cm long extended. Seats four to six. The 73 cm height suits standard dining chairs, and the round shape leaves room to move around the table when it is closed.
