Description

This is a Revolt armchair, designed by Friso Kramer in 1953 and produced by Ahrend de Cirkel in the Netherlands; this example dates to the 1960s.

The Revolt is one of the defining pieces of Dutch industrial design, built from folded sheet steel rather than the tubular frames common at the time, giving it real strength from very little material and a frame that flexes slightly under the sitter rather than staying rigid. Kramer designed the chair for functional, everyday use, and the armchair variant here, wider through the arms than the standard dining chair, is a genuinely less common version of the design.

The piece has been fully restored in our Torquay studio. The seat and backrest were stripped back and fitted with new high-density foam, then reupholstered in Warwick Buckley Sunrise, a textured weave that sits warm against the industrial steel frame. The frame itself has been cleaned and polished while keeping its vintage character rather than looking new.

Dimensions: 57cm wide, 48cm deep, 80cm high, seat height 48cm.

Suited to a home office desk, studio corner, or anywhere a single, considered seat is needed. Available to view in our Torquay studio.
