Restored Ercol Model 419 Refectory Dining Table in Solid English Elm
This is the Model 419 Refectory Table, a standout piece from Ercol’s celebrated "Old Colonial" range. While it carries the visual gravitas of a traditional farmhouse trestle table, it features the refined engineering of mid-century design. We have treated this piece to a full professional restoration at our Torquay studio, stripping away the tired vintage lacquer to reveal the spectacular grain underneath.
The Restoration
- The Finish: To save this table, we have replaced the original high-gloss varnish with a premium Hardwax Oil. This modern finish is microporous, allowing the wood to breathe while offering superior durability against spills and heat.
- The Feel: The result is a satin, natural surface that feels like wood, not plastic. It invites touch and highlights the incredible grain of the English Elm top.
Design Details
- The Timber: The top is crafted from solid English Elm, a timber now commercially extinct due to Dutch Elm Disease. Owning this table is preserving a piece of natural history.
- The Base: Supported by solid Beech trestle legs with a central stretcher, this design maximizes legroom (no corner legs to bang knees on) and provides exceptional stability. Every joint has been assessed and re-wedged where necessary, eliminating the vintage wobble.
Condition
- Status: Immaculate restored condition. The grain is rich and vibrant, with the two-tone contrast between the dark Elm top and lighter Beech legs beautifully defined. Ready for another 50 years of family dinners.
