Iwatsu Rainbow Hineri Art Glass Vase, Osaka, Japan, c. 1970s
Description
Blue, green, yellow, orange, pink and violet run in vertical bands through the clear glass of this Iwatsu vase, from a heavy clear base up to the rim.
Iwatsu Glass was based in Osaka and was at its most productive in the 1960s and 1970s, making art glass that is often mistaken for Italian Murano and Czech pieces. The body follows the Hineri style Iwatsu is known for, hand twisted into soft vertical lobes. Hineri is the Japanese word for twist.
Colour sits inside the glass rather than on it. Where two bands meet they blend and overlap, so the vase changes as the light moves across it, and it reads as a bright object even when it is empty.
It keeps its original label, marked Art Glass with the Iwatsu logo, which helps to confirm the maker.
The base is heavy clear glass, which gives the vase weight and stability. Height 24 cm, diameter 10 cm.
Condition is very good, with a high gloss lustre and minimal surface wear. A small internal cooling mark at the base is consistent with handmade manufacture.
Hand wash in warm water with a little mild soap and dry with a soft cloth. Keep the label dry.
