James Dean 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' Framed Poster, c. 1987
Description
James Dean walks through a rain wet New York street in this vintage framed poster, printed with the title Boulevard of Broken Dreams beneath his name.
The image shows Dean from behind and to one side, in a dark overcoat with his collar turned up, head bent against the weather, with wet pavement, tram tracks and blurred city lights behind him in a soft pink and grey dusk. The pose recalls the 1955 Times Square photographs of Dean taken in New York, and it has become one of the most reproduced images of him. The poster is printed on a scale that suits a wall of its own, and the dark figure stands out against the pale sky.
The same title was used by Gottfried Helnwein for his 1984 painting of Dean, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Humphrey Bogart at a diner counter, which is a different work.
It is a vintage decorative poster, not an original photograph, and it is sold as such. It is framed in a slim black frame.
A poster like this suits a study, a hallway or a lounge wall, and the soft pink and grey palette sits comfortably against teak and timber. Hang it from a secure fixing suited to the weight of your wall, away from direct sun.
