Japanese Free Form Art Glass Vase in Red and White with Handkerchief Rim, c. 1970
Description
Red glass cased in white gives this Japanese free form vase its glowing, two colour body, finished with a folded, handkerchief style rim.
Cased glass is made by layering one colour over another while the glass is hot, so the white sits inside the red and lifts it. Where the glass is thin, at the folds of the rim, the red lightens and the white shows through, and where it is thick, at the base, the red deepens. The rim is folded in on itself like a handkerchief, an approach popular with Japanese and Italian glass houses through the 1960s and 70s, and it turns the mouth of the vase into a soft, wavy edge.
We have not found a maker's mark, so it is offered as Japanese art glass of the period without an attribution. If you find a label or a mark on the base, message us and we will update the listing.
The strong colour makes it a good single object on a sideboard, a shelf or a window sill, where light can pass through the glass.
Hand wash in warm water with a little mild soap and dry with a soft cloth.
