Description
Myer Heritage furniture, made under the direction of the designer Fred Ward, gave Australian homes solid, honestly made timber furniture from the late 1940s, and this lowboy is a compact example, with four drawers and a cupboard.
Fred Ward (1899 to 1990) managed the furniture workshop at the Myer Emporium in Melbourne, and was a pioneer in the use of native Australian timbers at a time when many makers copied European woods. The Heritage range was positioned as a step above the mass market, and its pieces are known for solid timber construction, dovetailed drawers and a plain, unadorned design.
This lowboy is built entirely from solid Tasmanian myrtle, including the internal shelf. It has four drawers stacked on the left, each with an oval timber pull, and a single cupboard door on the right that opens to a removable shelf. The cupboard locks, and this piece retains its original key. It stands on tapered, splayed feet. The timber is a warm, honey tone, and the grain runs cleanly across the drawer fronts and the door.
Dimensions: 91 cm W x 51 cm D x 107.5 cm H.
At this size it suits a bedroom as a chest of drawers, a hallway, or a lounge wall as a low cabinet. The top is level and clear, with room for a lamp, a mirror or a row of books.
Fully restored and refinished in Oli Natura hardwax oil, and structurally sound throughout. Wipe with a soft dry cloth, and use a light oil once a year if the timber looks dry.
