Description
Care Set No. 2 is for timber furniture finished with hardwax oil, and it also suits furniture finished with oil. It pairs Oli Natura Wood Soap for cleaning with Wood Care Wax, which refreshes worn areas and leaves a thin protective layer that dries to a silky matt sheen. Most furniture restored in our Torquay studio is finished in Oli Natura Hardwax Oil, so this is the set to choose for it. Care Set No. 1 swaps the wax for Wood Care Oil and is made for timber finished with oil alone.
Which set
Put a drop of water on a hidden horizontal surface and leave it for two minutes. If it darkens the timber slightly and fades as it dries, the piece is oiled and one of the two sets will suit it. Choose this set for hardwax oil, or if you are not sure, since Wood Care Wax suits both oiled and hardwax oiled timber. Choose Care Set No. 1 when you know the finish is oil alone and you want to keep it that way. If the drop sits as a tight bead and wipes away leaving nothing behind, the piece is almost certainly lacquered and neither set is right for it.
What is in the box
- Oli Natura Wood Soap, 250 ml
- Oli Natura Wood Care Wax, 250 ml
- Polishing pad
- Oil absorbent cloth
- Disposable gloves
- Care guide leaflet
How to use it
- Add 5 to 10 ml of Wood Soap to 1 litre of lukewarm water. Wipe the surface along the grain with a soft, well wrung cloth and let it dry completely.
- Put on the gloves and shake the Wood Care Wax well.
- Put a small amount on the polishing pad and work it into the timber along the grain. A thin coat is all it needs.
- Leave it for no more than 10 minutes, then buff off any excess with the absorbent cloth.
- Leave the piece for at least 12 hours, ideally overnight, before using it, and avoid wiping it with a damp cloth for the next few days.
How often
Clean with Wood Soap once a week for a dining table or desk in daily use, and every few weeks for a sideboard or bedside table. Refresh with Wood Care Wax once or twice a year on a dining table in daily use, and far less often on a sideboard. The simplest guide is a drop of water: when it stops beading and starts to darken the timber, it is time.
Safety
Cloths and pads soaked in wax or oil can catch fire on their own as they dry. Rinse them straight after use, lay them flat outdoors to dry fully, or keep them in a sealed container of water before throwing them out.
Why we use Oli Natura
We choose trade quality finishes for our restorations, even when they cost more and take longer to apply, because we work with them every day in the studio and the furniture we restore goes into homes with children and pets. Oli Natura's oils and waxes are VOC free and based on plant oils and waxes such as soy oil and carnauba wax. Oli Natura Hardwax Oil, which most of our restorations are finished in, is also free of aromatics, formaldehyde, cobalt, biocides and preservatives, and once cured it is tested to EN 71-3, the European safety standard for children's toys. Because the finish sits in the grain rather than forming a film on top, a worn or marked area can be repaired on its own, without stripping the whole piece.
