Description

Three individual woodblock printed pages from the Hokusai Manga, the multi-volume sketchbook series by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), presented together in a single triptych mount.

The Manga was Hokusai's attempt at an encyclopedia of the observable world, and these three pages reflect that range: a study of Shishi, the guardian lion-dogs of Japanese folklore; sparrows and finches caught mid-movement; and a contrast of formal court figures against everyday labourers. Each page was chosen individually and brought together here rather than printed as a single composition.

Provenance by The Japanese Gallery, London, specialists in Japanese woodblock prints since 1977. Genuinely 19th-century, Edo-to-Meiji-era printing, since the blocks for the Manga remained in use for many decades after Hokusai's death.

Mounted in a custom triple-window mount within a solid oak frame, with TruGuard UV-protection glass.

Dimensions: 72cm wide, 43cm high.

Available to view in our Torquay studio.
