Katsushika Hokusai 'The Flower Basket' Woodblock, 19th Century

Peonies, hydrangeas and irises spill from a woven basket on this page from the Hokusai Manga, Katsushika Hokusai's multi-volume sketchbook series, the same artist behind The Great Wave.

The composition carries the energetic linework and hatching typical of Hokusai's studies. Japanese woodblock prints of this kind, including Hokusai's own work, are widely credited with influencing the European Impressionists later in the century.

Authenticated by The Japanese Gallery, London, specialists in Japanese woodblock prints since 1977. Genuinely 19th-century, Edo to Meiji era printing, since the Manga's blocks remained in use for decades after Hokusai's death.
