Description

Stamped with the Herman Miller patent numbers 3041100 and 3024000 on the frame, this Eames Aluminium Group EA316 lounge chair dates to the early to mid-1960s, before Herman Miller's 1985 switch from a four-prong to a five-prong aluminium base.

Designed by Charles and Ray Eames, the EA316 is a low, wide-bodied chair built around a ribbed leather sling suspended in a polished aluminium frame, a design credited with bringing genuine comfort to what had previously been a rigid, formal chair type. This example retains its original dark charcoal leather, still supple across the seat, which is uncommon for a chair of this age.

Professionally restored. The aluminium base and frame have been polished, with some patina intentionally left in place to preserve the chair's history, and can be polished further on request. The swivel and recline mechanism operates smoothly.
