Vintage Persian Hamadan Wool Runner with Geometric Diamond Pattern
A magnificent and soulful vintage Persian Kenareh (runner) from the esteemed village-weaving tradition of the Hamadan region.
Hand-knotted in the mid-20th century, this extraordinary piece is a testament to the weaver's artistry, blending powerful tribal geometry with the robust, lasting construction of a settled village weave.
This is not a common piece. While many Hamadan rugs of this era feature the ubiquitous Herati pattern, this weaver has instead created a deeply personal and powerful field of repeating diamond guls. Each medallion, rendered in a striking, deep indigo, is a masterwork of symbolic language: at its heart, an eight-pointed star for cosmic harmony, surrounded by protective "hooked" elements to ward off the evil eye. This motif, long associated with female weavers and fertility, is repeated like a mantra across the field, creating a composition that is both dynamic and profoundly harmonious.
The field itself is a study in colour. The pure wool pile, dyed with traditional, small-batch methods, glows with a remarkable "abrash" - a subtle, natural variation in the madder red that moves from deep crimson to bright cherry. This is the authentic signature of a true, hand-made vintage piece, imbuing the surface with a "living" quality that cannot be replicated by modern, machine-made rugs.
This runner's journey is told in its superb condition. The wool pile is thick, plush and even, a testament to decades of life, while the cotton foundation remains strong and secure. Framed by a powerful main border of stylised boteh (the seed of life) and guard borders of "running water," this rug is a complete, woven story of protection and eternity.
This rare piece is perfectly suited for the discerning collector or interior designer seeking an authentic, one-of-a-kind work of textile art to anchor a hallway, entryway, or living space.
